Father’s day

Frank Hopkins, one of the campus directors at WK, shared some thoughts in our huddle before the Services started. This was his first father’s day without his dad. He missed him so much. It was a great picture of the brevity of life, and it complimented the series DASH that we just finished at our church. If you haven’t heard the  messages make sure you check ‘em out online at cffamily.org/messages

In any case, I got spend some great time with my father who recently had a heart attack. He has been instrumental in my life and I thank God that I still get to talk to him on a regular basis. One of these days, in the blink of an eye, I may be in Frank’s shoes.

Chronicles @ West Kendall

We’ve prayed to serve our community and the Regal Cinema theaters at West Kendall Village has asked us to host their “family fun days” promoting the Chronicles of Narnia movie. Thank you God for this opportunity! It’s going to be awesome, we used a bunch of props that make a section of the theater lobby look like the land of Narnia…we’ve painted the whole entrance of the theater, we’ll be playing video games, kids will be taking pictures with Prince Caspian, balloon sword fights and more… Don’t miss out. Saturday and Sunday May 17th and 18th from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. Make it a date !

Vent

Imagine… You’re sick, you have an allergy, you’re desperate for medical attention and you live in the country that has probably the best technology and resources to take care of you. Sadly, resources aren’t enough, people need to be in certain places so that those resources can be made available to other people, and since people are inherently selfish, fearful, and careless about others, many times they just keep the resources to themselves.

Let me prove a point… when you first call a doctor’s office what’s the first question that they ask you?

I bet its just the question that I got last week when I tried to find a doctor to take care of my wife… “What kind of insurance do you have?

People actually stop you and tell you, “tell me about your insurance and then we’ll talk about the problem that you’re having,” so they don’t waste time in asking you what’s wrong with you.

I pray we don’t do the same as Christians when people come in hurting to the church. I pray that we care. I pray that we listen.

I’ve erased so many thoughts from this experience… I guess its some form of venting.

Evidence of change…

Sometimes its hard to keep track of the transformation and the work that God does on our lives. I sat down to think how He has worked in my life and I find myself wowed by the insane changes and blessings that he’s decided carry out in my life… Some of these evidences are tangible, I can point to some incredible things that I can touch and that point to His love, His existence, my relationship with Him, etc. But perhaps the most telling is the change within, the change that He’s made in my heart… I thought “Why do I want to help do such and such?, or where does this drive to serve come from?” or “how come I don’t struggle with such and such anymore?”… Anyways… it hit me hard. He really changed me, like, He’s changed my desires, my thoughts, its crazy.

These verses in Romans 8 struck me…

5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires 9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Pursuit

I think that in our pursuit of God we may stumble upon some crazy ideas don’t you think? Anyways, happy Valentine’s Day to all.  CF West Kendall kicks off this weekend! See you there!

Jesus loves me

Check it,

letter to self.

Epale chamo,

I think you think you’re a good person deep down inside, but you’re not.

Love, C.

Embracing Accusation

Shane and Shane are sick. like sick. Their website should be (www.shane&shane.sick/unreal/whyyoushouldn’tsing/CHEA.) Not only do they sing like angels, which makes me feel like I should go ahead and do something else rather than lead worship, but they seem to have degrees in theology and writing. Seriously, God really blesses these guys with amazing songs. Check out this new one from their new album “PAGES” it’s called “embracing accusation.”After you examine the meaning behind the song, gimme a chea, and e-mail me with collective praise for what God has done in their lives…and in your ears.

Reach Beyond

downtown_skyline-4695.jpg

This week I went downtown with our small group to “Reach Beyond” the doors of the church out into the community. We passed out free water bottles and gave invite cards to people. There’s a couple things I learned about this outreach.
1. Miami people are naturally very skeptical and distrustful.
2. Downtown is ridiculously diverse. Like crazy. like miami isdiverse.com/downtown/sick.jpeg
3. People in of walks of life want, crave peace, understanding, purpose.
4. I need to memorize tons of scripture.

Let me delve into one of these. I met a drug dealer when I handed out the water bottle. Great guy, charming, friendly, I mean he’s from Hawaii so what do you expect? He told me that he had been married for 15 years and that those years had been the best in his life. He said that he went to church, that everything was awesome during that time BUT, that he also was very tempted with money and power throughout his life. He told me “the thing is, the bad things also feel so good man.” Anyways he decided to sell drugs to make some good money, to have a cool life, and in the middle of one of his crazy stories I realized that they were actually very interesting, fun, some would say. I could see how a man could be attracted to those things, to that life, to the allure and the thrill. I could see how I would be attraacted to the “fun” of it. It reminded me of what Pastor Blackwood from our church said in one of the sermons in our last series. He said, “you know what the biggest lie that the devil has? It’s simply this. Christians can’t have fun.” Should I say more?

And there, you see, I saw a man consumed by sin, drenched in the guilt of what he did to his family, discouraged because he doesn’t believe God can change him, a man that believes “its only downhill from here…” he actually goes to the 8:45 service at what used to be Central Baptist Church. He said he’d go check CF Downtown now… I pray God would use us to help him.

Reach Beyond is cool

Lukewarm

So I finally heard Francis Chan’s passion 07 message this morning. (you can check it here)and it was awesome. He talks about being lukewarm as a Christian and how it is so commonplace in the American church. These days it seems like the glory of Christ and the majesty of his throne are just as good as a Heat game, or a U2 concert. You gotta check it out. Maybe, just maybe you’ll can see him at one of the passion conferences this year… or maybe instead of going into debt to go see him preach, instead of trying to find God’s glory in some conference, you could go home and spend some time with God and ask Him to show you. Alone……I need to do that.

Chan will be at some of these…
